Animal instincts for summer accessories

Putting their best feet forward, Rick Owens and Sacai demonstrated in glamorous burlesque fashion how a feathered ankle adornment could liven up your heels and wedges, while Balenciaga’s shaggy threads brought life to Gladiator-style sandals.  In the spirit of going back to nature; animal prints continued to dominate on ballerina flats from Lanvin, Alaïa and French Sole, zebra and leopard patterns on brogues from Christian Louboutin and Miu Miu, with different distinct pelt prints also seen on a range of hosiery by Wolford.

 

Fur fashion lusciously lined handbags from the shearling backpacks of Jas MB to the shearling button front shoulder bags of Christian Dior.  Fur trims were added by Valentino on their bow bag, Yves Saint Laurent’s suede leather shoulder bag with fox fur trim & the shearling-trimmed cracked-leather carryall in deep blue from Matthew Williamson.  Stand out bags saw the vivaciously dazzling neon brights of Miu Miu in faux fur, Balmain’s suede shoulder bag with crystal leopard print and Mulberry’s Leo Scotchgrain Tote with its elegantly subtle leopard stamp and smart leather finish.

 

Snake skin has proven a popular summer bag with a variety of style from the likes of Anya Hindmarch’s Valorie Clutch, the Desert Monique clutch from Halston Heritage, a glazed python tote from Reed Krakoff and L.K.Bennett’s Anna Bag.  With other reptilian favourites bringing crocodile and alligator skin out from the depths by Nancy Gonzalez, Burberry and Jimmy Choo’s crocodile-effect calf hair Gaia tote or the powerful addition of high colour to the look from fur fashion giant Fendi.

 

The elegant enveloped-shaped clutch has garnered much attention under the summer rays, with examples from Dolce & Gabbana’s pochette clutch with ocelot print in hair calf and Sara Berman’s vintage-style Emma animal print. While tote bags have leant themselves particularly well to a larger and more striking print effect, perfectly demonstrated by Michael Kors cheetah in calf hair, the ‘Brenda’ from Diane von Furstenberg presenting spotted cat or leopard splash designs on canvas, Vivienne Westwood’s leopard on the Yasmin Tote and Iron Fist offered fangs and fury in their Wolfbeater Printed Tote bag.  Purses have also adopted an audacious animal infusion from the likes of DKNY’s leopard print in calf hair, Jerome Dreyfuss’ leopard Popoche Wallet, Alexander McQueens Leopard Pony Skull Charm Wallet and the dome frame purse in bold animal tones from High Street favourites, Dorothy Perkins.

 

Light scarves and stoles for the summer months have seen the masterful colour-blocking in fur fashion of Prada’s must-have fox fur stole, the muted sophistication of Yves Saint Laurent’s lightweight wool and cashmere-blend with leopard homage, Melford Green’s light feel but inherently warm alpaca wraps in a kaleidoscope of bright hues and Marc by Marc Jacobs jungle animal print in wool.  While jewellery saw the feather effect back in full force on earrings and necklaces by Chanel, the multi tonal ‘All The Midnight In The World’ feather earrings and cuff from Isabel Marant and the brass cut-out panther range from Marc by Marc Jacobs.

 

Headstrong animal instincts showed their prowess in the striking combination of panther print and rabbit felt on fedora design by Anthony Peto’s Andorra snow hat, Emma Fielden’s wide-brimmed and floppy cow tone hat in rabbit hair, the Parisian chic of an Angora Beret in Tiger print from the High Street stylings of TopShop and the graceful trilby brim-print from Helene Berman.
