How to Measure your Wrist for your Perfect Bracelet Size
There are basically 2 methods of measuring your wrist. You can use a soft tape measure like the ones that designers wear draped around their necks. Sounds like a cliché but it’s true. Or you can use a straight ruler along with a string or shoelace.
If you’re using the soft tape measure, simply wrap this around your wrist. Make sure it’s not too tight or too lose. Right up against your skin is where it needs to be. Record that measurement.
If you’re using a shoelace or string (not too stretchy), simply wrap this around your wrist and mark off this distance around. You can literally mark this distance with a pen, or even just hold your thumbnail on the string. Remember to hold the string against your skin, not too loose or tight. You’ll then lay that string onto a straight ruler and record that measurement.
In both methods you’ve now learned your wrist size. The rule of thumb to know your bracelet size is to add 3/4 – 1 inch to your wrist size measurement. This rule of thumb applies very well to beaded bracelets with beads approximately 6-8mm in diameter. If the beads in the bracelet are smaller, you’ll want a slightly (1/8″ – 1/4″) smaller bracelet length. If the beads in the bracelet are larger, you’ll want a slightly (1/8″ – 1/4″) larger bracelet length. If it’s a cuff style bracelet you’re measuring for just add 1/4 – 1/2″ to your wrist measurement.
If the bracelet you’re interested in has a toggle clasp (the circle on one end and bar on the other) measuring correctly is very important. If you should wear a bracelet that is too long, too much slack may cause the clasp to come undone and you could lose the bracelet. Don’t be afraid of them though. I love them and have been wearing toggle clasp bracelets for years without ever losing one. Just follow these instructions and you’ll be fine. Some people only buy lobster claw clasp pieces for the added security. It’s just a matter of proper measuring and preference. Take a peek at photos of both a toggle clasp and lobster claw clasp here.
